Se firma el Tratado de Guadalupe-Hidalgo, mediante el cual termina la guerra entre México y Estados Unidos. Los mexicanos americanos en Arizona, California, Nevada, Nuevo México y Texas reciben el derecho a votar y a la ciudadanía estadounidense. Sin embargo, se requiere que los votantes hablen inglés, sean propietarios y puedan leer y escribir, lo cual impide que muchos mexicanos americanos puedan votar. Se emplea violencia e intimidación contra mexicanos americanos que tratan de votar.
1866
La Ley de Derechos Civiles de 1866 declara que todas las personas nacidas en los Estados Unidos son ciudadanos del país, sin importar su raza o color o si fueron esclavos.
